Yep! All of the above. We hosted our first Cook-In and people were smiling as they stacked containers of prepared food to take home. But first, let’s share how the evening started. Don purchased food, set up cooking stations, and demonstrated how to prepare ingredients at each area. Our Next Cook-In will take place on October 14th at the United Church of Ferndale (WA). You can expect the usual cooking lesson and leave with a box of sample food prepared in the class. But will there be more accomplished during the evening? Of course. and here are five benefits that deserve a huge thumbs up.
- The FMP Cook-Ins are designed by the participants. A pre-registration questionnaire lets each person indicate preferences and recipes can be tweaked accordingly.
- Every effort is given by the host to make sure everyone is comfortable and able to enjoy the camaraderie. fostering friendships is a top priority.
- Participants actually do the cooking during “hands-on” lessons. They usually prepare the ingredients for their future flexible meals. They also make extra food and exchange with each other.
- When available, natural, fresh and eco-friendly ingredients assure that meals are healthy and tasty.
- Leaders are trained to share not only their ideas, but act as moderator to get everyone to share their unique tips and tricks. Important discussion topics include: nutrition, presentation, safety, budgeting, planning and total family involvement during sit-down-meals.

We held our first Ferndale Food Bank cook-in featuring a meal of the month. It was so much fun sharing ideas that we failed to notice the busy activity in the food bank or how cramped we were in our 8 X 14 room. Now if you think you need a commercial kitchen to work in, you are mistaken. All you need is a sink, counter space, small appliances and delightful people willing to roll up their sleeves and cook. Imagine inviting two friends into your kitchen, each with a sack of groceries and a recipe book. You work together to prep the ingredients for three meals and enjoy relaxed conversation. Some ingredients are cooked and cooled, then everything is bagged and labeled to be used in future meals. Each friend takes enough food home to assemble their family meals for 3 days. Host a Cookie Cook-In by Don R
Getting people together to bake cookies is certainly not a new idea. Friends, church groups, and clubs often gather to bake for bazaars, holiday baskets, weddings or just about any excuse to socialize. Last night I had the opportunity to join our church group to bake cookies for an upcoming event. It was an enjoyable, enlightening, and hands-on experience! In addition, their “cook-In,” which was so simply organized, will serve as a model for future FMP “cook-Ins.” Continue reading
